Spoon Customs

Better Bikes… Inspired by our landscape… Made for yours

Collaborating with Spoon Customs, a high end bespoke road bike designer and manufacturer, to develop a solution for top quality client facing visuals for custom paint design and layout. Andy, owner and founder of Spoons Customs was looking for something with Vectorised 2D illustration that could be edited in house for client proposals of paint schemes. After researching both their Steel Izoard and Carbon Vars frameset offerings via photographs, two frameset templates were produced, both using the same geometry for visual balance. Matt and Gloss finishes were illustrated to define the signature shaping of both frames, along with correct head badge, Chris King branded headset and bottom bracket, and stem / bar combos. All colour elements of the framesets are fully editable, as well as a full custom paint mask in place so any artwork can be added with ease.

The completed templates were delivered with a strong emphasis on easy usability through a layering system, making editing as easy as possible for future projects and in house users.

Final client facing visuals are pieces of artwork, that match the attention to detail put into the real bikes, and become part of the brand story for all customers. The Ai templates can be used using iPad and pencil to show clients face to face paint and colour concepts in real time.

To take things a step further, the illustrated frames were then added to with a full selection of illustrated branded components, drawn up in the same style and quality, to be used in a full online Spoons web based bike builder experience. Attention to detail was used across the build of components, making sure they not only represented the real products on offer, but were scaled and could be used across both steel and carbon framesets to aid in the back end bike builder construction.

Brickmaker's Alehouse

Logo, branding, identity, and location elevation design of Brickmaker’s Alehouse based in Bexhill, Sussex. Working directly with owners and longstanding real ale enthusiasts Martin and Robin, a branding pack was produced. The branding and logo stems off the new location, 27 Sea Road, which was used for many years by Lunsford Brick and Tile Manufacturing Co as a showroom for their local brick works. From detailed research, images of original bricks produced by the company were found and the proportions of the logo, and custom font type used are based off these elements. The existing Lunsford mosaic tile entrance step was used to create a colour pallet for the new direction, with an external elevation design being delivered, as well as creative direction on interior colour materials and finish. Exterior sign writing hand painted by local sign painter Rob Finn, with all other artwork materials for print and digital use created in various formats.

SOURCE PARK DECK

A hand painted skateboard deck that is currently on display at the new Source skate park based in Hastings. As part of the new skate park build, the new café inside is host to a gallery of 40 decks in which a percentage of proceeds will go to charity. For this project I really wanted to connect my work to the historic new location and venue. Research in the local library soon found some interesting black and white images, from which it was clear to see the location was a hive of sign written advertisement. I recreated one of the entry signs from 1910 using traditional sign writing techniques and materials.

LIKE FATHER LIKE SON

A personal photographic/ art installation named ‘Connection’ at the 2016 Revolution show, featuring original images captured during the seventies, along with a custom hand painted helmet, and exhibited alongside my personal bike:

“A collection of original photos taken during the Seventies of my Dad and his bikes at the start of what would be a lifetime passion of motorcycle culture.

Taken locally in the village of Northiam, the photos capture the raw feeling of satisfaction after a Saturday of cleaning and perfecting, before a Sunday ride out with friends.

Time moves on, but nothing really changes. A shared passion for two wheels leads me to complete my first shed build based on a Seventies bike, and so the journey begins"

RX-1 Lamp

An interior lighting solution designed to be bought in kit form and put together by the individual. Inspired by childhood trips to Dungeness Lighthouse, it plays with the idea of the architectural interior space of such a structure, using the natural curvature of the cable material to replicate an internal spiral staircase. It requires no tools to put together and uses the cable to hold its form. Produced using CNC from high grade birch plywood, it connects to the Dungeness coastal architecture and can be built up using a number of cable patterns and colours. The lamp must be deconstructed to remove and renew the bulb, and then rebuilt….. creating an engaging and rewarding experience. ‘RX’ is the fishing boat registration code for the local town of Rye, which can be found painted across boats and buildings throughout the Dungeness beach area. The RX-1 lamp is an on going personal project…. created whilst collaborating with Rockpool Studio.
